Marine debris is harmful to all marine animals, including seabirds like the Laysan albatross. The albatross are surface feeders and their diet consists of organisms that float on the surface, such as squid, fish, crustaceans, and fish eggs. Unfortunately, marine debris also floats on the surface, and it is estimated that 5 tons of plastic is mistaken for floating fish eggs or squid and is fed to chicks each year.
